About the Christening

Washington (SSN 787), named for the State of Washington, was christened at Newport News Shipbuilding March 5, 2016. During the ceremony, Ship's Sponsor Elisabeth Mabus, daughter of Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, performed the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the ship's bow.

Built for America

Designed to meet the Navy's requirements in a post-Cold War era, the 377-foot-long submarines are capable of submerged speeds of more than 25 knots and can stay submerged for up to three months at a time.
